Meet the Educators

Dr. Natasha Burford
Vice Principal, Educator, Researcher & Author
Dr. Natasha Burford is a Vice Principal at Kapapamachcakwew, Wandering Spirit, the TDSB’s only k-12 public school for Indigenous students. Dr. Burford also teaches at University of Toronto and Niagara University Ontario as a sessional lecturer. Her research interests include Black Canadian Feminism, Black Girlhood, and anti-Black racism, equity and diversity in public schooling.
She holds a doctorate and a M.A in social justice education from OISE/University of Toronto, and a Bachelors in Education from York University. She is the recipient of the William’s Water Urban Diversity Scholarship in 2014 and the New Teacher award in 2010. Dr. Burford has been teaching for more than 19 years. Her debut, newly published book titled “Black Girlhood and Identity in Canadian Elementary Schools: A Feminist Perspective on Voice, Agency and Visibility, was released in 2025.

Dr. Zuhra Abawi
Assistant Professor, Equity Strategist & Educational Leader
Dr. Zuhra Abawi is an assistant professor of education at Niagara University Ontario. Her research interests include anti-racism, equity and diversity in educational leadership and teacher hiring practices. She holds a doctorate in social justice education from OISE/University of Toronto, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in education, and a Bachelor of Arts (honours) in political science from York University, as well as a diploma in early childhood education.
Zuhra is an Ontario Certified Teacher. In addition to teaching at Niagara University Ontario, she has also taught at OISE/University of Toronto, Western University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Seneca College, and George Brown College. Prior to teaching in higher education, she was a teacher and early childhood educator.

Burford & Abawi Consulting Ltd. is a collaborative initiative by Dr. Natasha Burford and Dr. Zuhra Abawi—two seasoned educators whose work is committed to equitable and inclusive education grounded in antiracist and anti-oppressive frameworks. They bring experience from all levels of education from the early years, K-12, college and university sectors to effectively merge theory and practice in meaningful ways to support culturally relevant pedagogical and leadership approaches.
